The tomb of the famous Baul emperor Fakir Lalon Shah is located in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia district in Bangladesh. After his death on 16 October 1890, he was buried at Chheuria. Later his disciples built a shrine here. The locals call it Lalon Akhra. There are rows of graves of his disciples in the tomb of Lalon Shah. Lalon Shah used to teach principles and spiritual teachings to his disciples in this Cheuria. Since his death, Lalon Academy and the district administration have been holding a huge commemoration on his first Kartik every year. Every year during this time of winter, Baul devotees from home and abroad as well as a large number of tourists gather. At this time the biggest Lalon Mela was organized. Also another fair is held here in Dol Purnima festival. At this time, songs of Baul artists are sung all night long. Next to Lalon Shah’s shrine is the Lalon Museum. The museum has various items commemorating Lalon Shah. There are several rare pictures. Admission to the museum is two TK.
How to go:
Kushtia can be reached by bus and train. Shyamoli, Sohag, Hanif, SB, Khaleq Paribahan buses go directly to Kushtia from Dhaka’s Gabtoli bus terminal. Both AC and non-AC buses operate. You can get off the bus in Kushtia and go to Lalon Shah’s shrine by rickshaw or autorickshaw. You can go to Kushtia by train again by Sundarbans Express Chitra and Express train. You have to get off at Kushtia’s Poradaha or Bheramara station and go to Kushtia town by bus or CNG. From there you have to take a rickshaw to Lalon Shah’s shrine.
How to go low cost:
You can go to Kushtia by non-AC bus from Dhaka. Non-AC bus fare is 450 to 500 TK. You can get off the bus and go to the shrine by rickshaw. Rickshaw fare is 20 to 30 TK.
How to go luxuriously:
If you want to travel comfortably, you can choose AC bus. AC bus fare from Dhaka to Kushtia is 600 to 750 TK. You can get off the bus and go to the market by autorickshaw.
